Why When You Use Power in Texas is a Big Deal for the Energy Grid

We don’t often think about when we flip on the lights, crank up the AC, or fire up the washing machine. But in Texas, timing is everything when it comes to your energy usage — and it’s not just about saving a few bucks (though that’s a nice perk too). Let’s dive into why the when of your electricity matters as much as the how much.

Peak Times = Grid Stress

Picture this: it’s 4 PM on a sweltering Texas summer day. You’re not alone in blasting your AC — millions of other Texans are doing the same. This creates what's called “peak demand.” During these hours, the state’s grid operator (ours is ERCOT) is working overtime to keep the lights on and your AC humming. To meet this sky-high demand, less-efficient, pricier power plants might be fired up, driving costs and emissions through the roof.

Texas Runs on Sunshine and Wind (Mostly)

Fun fact: Texas doesn’t just do everything bigger — it does renewable energy bigger, too! But here’s the catch:

- Solar power loves the midday sun.

- Wind power is a night owl, picking up steam when the sun sets.

If you’re using energy during these renewable sweet spots, you’re helping make the most of Texas’ abundant natural resources. Use it during the wrong time, and you’re leaning on the fossil-fueled backups. (Not so eco-friendly.)

Timing Can Save You Money

Energy prices fluctuate throughout the day, every day. Wholesale rates are lower during off-peak hours when demand is chill, and higher when the grid is sweating bullets to meet demand. You're saving the grid from working overtime by shifting your energy-heavy chores (think laundry, dishwashing, or charging your EV) to off-peak times.

If you have a time-of-use energy plan, it behooves you to use the most energy possible during those off-peak hours.

We have two products available, The Fan Club and Intelligent Octopus, that help you make a massive saving by using your energy at the right time- the best product depends on your home needs and how hands-on you want to be.

  • If you don't want to lift a finger and monitor your energy usage, you'll like Intelligent Octopus. This product will help you monitor your energy usage so that your home's AC and/or EV charger can run when the grid is cheapest. In exchange, you'll unlock our lowest energy rate, which equals about 30% off your bill every month.
  • If you'd like to keep control of your devices but want to manually shift your usage, consider enrolling in The Fan Club. You'll get the usual Octopus Energy rate but with a twist. You can unlock up to a 50% discount on your energy usage when the grid's energy mix is dominated by wind energy.

Blackout-Proofing the Grid

We’ve all got PTSD from Winter Storm Uri or seen one of the dozens of conservation notices from ERCOT during those extreme temp days. The Texas grid’s reliability is a hot topic, and spreading out energy usage is one way we can all help. By reducing demand during peak hours, we lower the risk of rolling blackouts and ensure there’s enough juice for everyone.

You’re Also Saving the Planet

Yes, really. When you time your energy use to align with renewable production or off-peak hours, you’re cutting down on emissions. Those fossil fuel plants we lean on during peak times? They’re not great for the planet. So, be a hero. Your future self (and the Earth) will thank you.

Quick Tips to Flex Your Energy Timing Skills

- Dishwasher diplomacy: Run it after 9 PM or before 10 AM.

- Laundry like a legend: Wash and dry clothes in the late evening.

- Thermostat tricks: Pre-cool or heat your home before peak hours, then let it ride. (Or enroll your thermostat in Intelligent Octopus!)

- EV enthusiasts: Charge your car overnight. Bonus points (and a lower rate) for charging it with Intelligent Octopus.

- Keep an eye on the grid: Give us, your TDSP, or ERCOT a follow on your favorite social media platform for grid updates. If you're really wanting to get in the weeds, bookmark this page from ERCOT. When operating reserves are in the green, you're good to pump up the power! Yellow means maybe don't go turning on everything, and red means try to conserve where possible.

By tweaking your energy habits, you’re not just saving money; you’re helping keep the Texas grid strong, resilient, and a little greener. Plus, it’s satisfying knowing you’re using your power — well, powerfully.
