Octopus Energy cheers world leaders on at COP26

With the United Nations’ critical climate change meeting underway at COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, at Octopus Energy, we urge world leaders to make more ambitious moves to create a sustainable, and more importantly, an inhabitable world for future generations. We are living through a crucial moment in history when we are confronted with both an extraordinary challenge and an unparalleled opportunity to preserve a safe and habitable planet. One way we can move towards this is by transforming our energy systems to deliver cheaper, reliable, renewable power to all Texans.

As we’ve seen, Texas is no stranger to extreme weather — from the tragic Winter Storm Uri to heatwave notifications early this summer — Texas has borne the brunt of our rapidly changing climate. The need for our nation to abandon fossil fuels and electrify everything is clear. And as the largest producer of wind power already, this energy transition can be a major opportunity for Texas’ economy and workforce.

It will take all of us doing our part. Already, we’ve seen global leaders take positive steps at COP26 towards slashing greenhouse emissions, ending deforestation, and providing funding around the globe for adaptation and mitigation efforts. But more can be done. Fortunately, the tools are at our disposal to make it happen. In the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) summary report on the science of climate change, leading scientists noted that limiting warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels is still possible. As a result, we can avert the worst consequences of a warming planet, but only if we rapidly scale the adoption of renewable energy technologies.

For Texans, the energy transition can deliver a better economy with more long-lasting jobs and greater household savings. In 2021, we’ve been honored to serve customers throughout our great state and help Texans on their own journey to decarbonization. It’s all part of our mission to provide a better energy experience.

We hope world leaders will continue their work to help us all move more quickly towards our sustainability goals. Over the next few weeks, so much can be accomplished, but the work will not stop at the end of negotiations in Glasgow. Focusing within our local sphere, we look forward to empowering more Texans to make change in their own lives and rewarding them with better energy and great value in the process.
