How does this work?
Intelligent Octopus for home batteries works to stabilize the Texas power grid by dispatching any available power from your battery back to the grid when it’s needed.
Texas is the nation’s leader in wind and solar generation, but the grid needs a bridge when the sun goes down and the wind ramps up. Batteries can act as that bridge so that we don’t have to rely on expensive and dirty fossil fuel plants. This challenge creates a unique opportunity for Texans with home battery systems to help support the grid (and get paid!) when demand outweighs supply.
All you need to do is connect your home battery to Intelligent Octopus in the Octopus Energy app and we’ll handle the rest.

Program FAQs
How will I get billed?
You will be billed at the 50% off rate based on your home's monthly consumption. Your battery must remain connected to receive the discount. If you disable your battery for more than 72 hours or consume more than 110% of your previous year's usage, you will be billed at the non-discounted rate.
Will I be charged for my imports?
No! We won't charge you for the imports related to any battery power that was sent back to the grid.
Do I pay for the power used to charge my battery?
No! You only pay for the power you consume. We cover the cost of charging the battery for the power sent back to the grid.
Who is eligible to sign up for Intelligent Octopus for Home Batteries?
The program is only open to Octopus Energy customers that have a compatible battery system that can import from the grid and is not connected to solar panels. We'll have a product that works with solar panels + a battery soon, tap the link below to join our waitlist.
Why is this program important?
Aside from the monetary benefits, you’re helping keep the Texas grid stabilized during extreme weather conditions, like our famously hot summers when power demand is at an all time high. By allowing us to dispatch the power from your battery, you’re helping to keep the lights on across the state and avoid rolling blackouts or grid failure.
How do I sign up?
Signing up is easy! You’ll first need to be an Octopus Energy customer to participate. Then, just submit your interest and if you meet the program criteria, we’ll get you synced with our team to get you enrolled.
What battery do I need to have to participate?
Right now, Intelligent Octopus for home batteries is available only for Enphase and SolarEdge owners.
Will there be energy reserved in my battery?
The grid is ever changing. Sometimes the grid needs short bursts of power to stabilize. Sometimes it's longer. We can't guarantee a specific threshold, but we promise to never let your battery reserve go below 20%. If power ever goes down in your neighborhood, you can use any portion of the battery that is in the battery at that time.
Can I still control my battery?
By enrolling, you're giving Octopus Energy control of your battery. If you want to manage your battery manually, you can opt out any time! However, if you choose to opt out, you’ll lose your Intelligent Octopus rate discount.
Is Intelligent Octopus only available for existing customers?
The program is available to both new and existing customers! Customers will need to be on an Octopus plan to take part, and have a connected battery.
Do I get paid for my exports?
The short answer is no, but you gain that same monetary value from your exports through the 50% discount.
