Why Time-of-Use Energy Plans Feel Hard to Switch To — and Why They’re Totally Worth It
Let’s be honest: changing the way you use energy isn’t always easy. Especially in Texas, where the summers are scorching, routines run deep, and most folks just want a simple energy plan that doesn’t break the bank (or the grid).
So when we talk about Time-of-Use (or TOU) energy plans- where the price of electricity depends on when you use it- we get why you might feel a little unsure.
The idea of “flexing” your energy habits can sound like a lot. But what if we told you it doesn’t have to be?
Let’s walk through some of the most common concerns Texans have about switching to a time-of-use plan- and how to make it work without flipping your life upside down 😉
1. Fixed-rate plans are familiar. TOU feels... new.
Fixed-rate energy plans are the go-to in Texas. One price, 24/7, no thinking required. TOU plans? They come with off-peak hours (like 10 PM to 6 AM) where energy is cheaper and greener, and peak hours where rates are a bit higher.
It’s different, yes- but not complicated. The goal is to encourage smarter energy use when the grid is less strained and cleaner. Bonus: it can lower your bill, too.
2. TOU plans sound confusing at first
We hear this a lot. "Do I have to run my washing machine in the middle of the night?" Nope. Time-of-use energy plans are about shifting what you can- not overhauling your whole life.
If you can run a load of laundry after 10 PM or set your EV to charge overnight, you’re already winning. And if you’re not sure where to start, we’ve got a guide for that.
3. It’s hard to break old habits
We get it- dinner is at 6, not midnight. Laundry happens when you can squeeze it in. Changing habits is tough, especially for busy households.
That’s why our time-of-use plans are built to fit real life. You don’t have to be perfect. Even small shifts like running the dishwasher overnight or pre-cooling your home can make you a massive saving.
4. Air conditioning is non-negotiable (and we respect that)
Let’s be real. In the Texas heat, no one’s turning off the AC. The idea of “using less during the day” might sound unrealistic- or downright uncomfortable.
Here’s the trick: pre-cooling. If you lower your thermostat before 2 PM, your home stays cool longer without needing to blast the AC during peak hours. If you’ve got a smart thermostat, even better- it can do the heavy lifting for you.
👆 If you’re not into manually shifting your HVAC usage, check out Intelligent Octopus for thermostats where we do all of that for you AND you can unlock our lowest rate. (That’s a win-win.)
5. The plan details aren’t always clear
Some energy plans make it tough to figure out what you’re actually paying. Electricity Facts Labels (EFLs) can be overwhelming, and average prices don’t tell the whole story.
We like to keep it simple:
💪 Flex hours (10 PM–6 AM): use more, pay less
🧘 Stretch hours (everything else): try to use a little less
That’s it. Easy to understand, and easier to act on.
6. Not everyone has smart home tech
Smart plugs, smart thermostats, EV chargers- they’re great for TOU plans, but not everyone has them. That’s okay.
You can still shift your usage with basic stuff:
- Use appliance timers
- Set reminders to start the dishwasher or dryer later
- Cook in bulk and reheat meals during off-peak hours
- You don’t need a “smart home” to make smart moves.
So… is a time-of-use plan right for you?
If you’re curious about saving on your energy bill, using cleaner electricity, and trying something a bit more future-friendly- then yes, it might be.
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being aware. And if we can help you flex a few habits while keeping things comfy, we’re doing our job right. Let’s keep it simple, smart, and just a little bit off-peak 😎
